Reflection & Conclusion

Reflection

I personally never thought that i will ever start a blog. But i got to admit it's quiet a adventurous journey writing this blog about Design and publication.

What did i learn?

At first , i dint know what to write and how to write a blog post. With the help of my lecturer and classmates i have gain a lot of knowledge through their guidance. I have learn to apply the different kinds of theories . I have also gain more knowledge about different topic such as kindle e-book , Tv Everywhere and etc. To me image is an important tool to be added to a blog thus will enhance the understanding of the content in the blog. According to Leeuwen (2006), images alone are too polysemous to stand alone as an image may mean a thousand meanings. (Walsh, 2006).Schriver(1997) states that text and images complement each other in a document where both coexist together to convey a message to the audience and to enhance the clarity and understanding of a message the audience.

Conclusion

As a conclusion , blogging is an important communication tool to educate , inform and also entertain people. Blogs includes peoples interpretation and different view about certain topics thus people's view got to be respected. Now i have realize how important blogging is to some of my peers. Furthermore , I know the basic knowledge about design and publishing Technic . Now i look forward to learn more about design and publishing in my upcoming semester.

Kindle e-book

What is Kindle e-book reader?

E-book reader is an electronic device that can replace reading materials. This device allows you to read materials without carrying any books or papers. This e-book is not a computer and does not have any wires connected to it. Furthermore, it allows access to 90,000 reading materials.

The differences between kindle e-book and print books

Kess & van Leeuwan (2006, p.204) discussed about the differences in terms of reading paths of linear and non-linear compositions. Linear compositions such as comic strip, novels are strictly coded & are meant to be read in sequence ( e.g left to right , top to bottom, line by line). Non-linear texts such as magazines, newspaper (1998, p.205) are less strictly coded and are read differently – can be read more than one way. This means the kindle e-book and the print media have the same content and design but the e-book is more user friendly and easy to get connected with. Walsh (2006,p.26) in her discussion on “ Reading in a Multimodal Environment”, said that written text is only one part of a message, & no longer the dominant part of the message. Her opinion is supported with crucial issues raised by Kress and others ( e.g, 2000: bearne, 2003) that, the screen” and multimodal texts have developed new literacies.

Kindle also tell the audience to buy kindle e-book and save the forest. As we know that global warming has become the most big issue that is talk about. He promotes his product and also educating the audience to save the planet.

Target Audience

The chart shows that the middle age (50-59) use kindle e-book . This e-book also has been promoted by Oprah Winfrey show and generally her target audience are the same age as the major age group in kindle e-book.

New forms of Media Publishing

Over the past decades new media has been developing rapidly due to new technologies. Traditional media is changing to New Media . One of the new form of media publishing Vlog. One of the most popular Vlog is YouTube.

According to squidoo.com, some of the benefits of youtube is that you can upload videos that allow other web users to either watch the videos online or download it . Too add on, this YouTube is FREE . There is a problem about YouTube that is copyright issues. Thus many companies are losing money because they are not paid royalty.

Print Vs. New media

Print

Vs.

Online

There are differences reading from the print and online. Design principles are different in both print and online media. According to Kress & van leeuwen (2006),readers read from left to right or right to left considering their cultural background but according to Dr Jacob Nielsen's study, 79% of web users only scan a webpage instead of reading the whole text. This is because reading from the computer's monitor is 25% slower then reading from print and also staring for too long at the monitors can increase eye strain.

According to Kress & van Leeuwen (2006), salience is a feature or some features of an element that makes it entrancing or the ‘degree to which an element draws attention to itself’. Thus, a document design is important in print or new media. This will catch audience attention to read the print or online. Walsh (2006) said that responses in an audience are usually achieved by the choices of color, size, angle and etc.

example of bad layouts (source- Google Images 2009)

Thus layout design is important to print and also online. According to Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006), element such as arrangement and visual appearance of writing contributes to meaning.
